Seltenes Naturereignis in Botswana: Savuti Channel führt wieder Wasser

von Marco Penzel

"Hi Everyone,Sit down, take a deep breath, and look at the attached pictures. Unbelievable. We had a small puddle in front of tent #2 on Saturday evening, so that was the night we chose to celebrate the return of the waters to Savuti Camp. We set up the bar in the shallow water and got all the guests in for a paddle, and we had a lucky spade so that they could dig away a little ground and help the channel on its way while making a wish. Twenty-four hours later (yesterday evening) the water in front of Camp was waist-deep. The Channel has now flowed on past the Camp and is making its way towards Mantshwe Pan in the east. There are still huge amounts of water pouring in over the slight rise of the fire break, andthe view from Camp is breathtaking: a sinuous snake of sapphire-blue water curling around the logpile hide and then sweeping around in front of the Camp, right beneath the guest tents. The contrast with the golden winter grass is stunning, and to see the Camp reflected in its own lagoon is a thing of wonder. It is hard to comprehend just how much water has arived, and to take stock of the fact that we are seeing events that haven't been seen for a generation. Truly we all feel immensely privileged to be here at this historic time, to get our feet wet in a re-born river, to fail to catch the fish which we can see rising each evening, and to watch all those typical dry area bird species (!): great white egret, pied kingfisher, white-faced duck, hammerkop, red-billed teal &c from the deck. This morning we witnessed two marabou storks pulling a snake out of the water and killing it. There is no telling now how far the water will flow. But we are living in historic times and trying to get our heads round the fact that the Savuti Channel is now even more beautiful and magical than it has been since the mid-1980's. You have all GOT to come and see this!Truly amazing. We are putting in an order for materials to build an ark now!
